Above: a brief meeting with Generaal Robert Magnus US Marines

During his 8 days stay in Afghanistan James held a lot of speeches and gave hundreds of books "All the Way to Berlin" to the men and women.

These books he received from his publisher for free for that purpose.
He had a personal chat with each of them and signed all books.

You can imagine what an enormous amount of energy that took from an almost 91 years 'young' man.

James however never was tired and kept himself and the others busy all day long. It seemed as if he became 60 years younger when he was among the troops and could talk with them.

At night, when we headed for bed, James took his pen to wrote in his diary.

When one of the commanding officers heard I came from Holland he took me to his office to show me some photos from men KIA. Men who were under his command when they were killed.

Among them a photo from Cor Strik a Dutch guy.

He told me these photos would stay there as long as he was in command to show his respect to these young men who gave their live to let other people live in freedom.

To me it was a touching moment though I never had met Cor Strik before. A Dutch soldier not to be forgotten.
At KANDAHAR base every week there is a market, held by the locals and much visited by the troops.
You can buy everything like carpets, (antique) weapons, cd's and dvd's, etc.

Hier was James voor gekomen. Boeken uitdelen en signeren. Voor iedereen een persoonlijk woordje. Onvermoeibaar bleef hij doorgaan. De boeken werden meteen ingezien zoals in het ziekenhuis hierboven rechts.
